Paul Galdone collection 1952-1990

Paul Galdone's papers focus on his work as an illustrator of children's books. The collection contains production material for 103 titles published between 1952 and 1987, and includes illustrative material and a small amount of manuscript material for stories adapted by Paul Galdone. The designer's notes, a small amount of correspondence, illustrations done in a publisher's dummies, layouts, paste-ups, photographs, proofs for illustrations and texts, shooting copy for reprints of art for some of the "Anatole" books done in 1990, production material for bookmarks, and some miscellaneous art including designs for a 1962 Christmas card.

Paul Galdone was born circa 1907 in Budapest, Austria- Hungary and immigrated to the United States in 1921. Galdone studied art at the Art Student's League and New York School for Industrial Design . He served in World War II in the U.S. Army, Engineers. The author and illustrator of children's books also was employed as a bus boy, electrician's helper, and fur dryer, in addition to four years in the art department at Doubleday (NY).
